The original text
First performed at the Prince of Wales' Theatre, London on 12 September 1866 and at Wallack's Theatre, New York, on 19 Decmeber 1866. Published inter alia by Samuel French in 1866 as Issue 384 of French's standard drama, the Dramatic Publishing Company , Chicago (in 1867?) and by R.M. De Witt, New York, in 1899.

Performance history in South Africa
1876: Performed in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town by Captain Disney Roebuck's company on 20 June, with Little Toddlekins (Mathews). The evening a benefit for Miss Robertson and Mr Foulis.
1877: Performed by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 12 December, with Creatures of Impulse (Gilbert) and a ballad performed by Miss Wynne. Performed as part of a "Grand Masonic Night under the … Patronage of … Grand Master R.W. Southey, C.M.G." Robertson's play described as a "grand military comedy" in the advertisements.
1877: Performed again by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 14 December, once more with Creatures of Impulse (Gilbert) and a ballad performed by Miss Wynne.
1877: Performed again by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 19 and 24 December. (Supporting programme not mentioned in these cases).
