The original text
First performed at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Liverpool, on 20 November, 1876 and in London at the Royal Aquarium Theatre on 10 January, 1877. Published in London and New York by Samuel French (probably 1877).

Performance history in South Africa
1878: Performed by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 15 July, with a song by Miss Wynne and a performance of Andy Blake, or The Irish Diamond (Boucicault). The evening a "Grand Complimentary Benefit" for Captain Roebuck.
1878: Performed again by Disney Roebuck and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 17 July, this time with Poppleton's Predicaments (Roe)
