First performed in London at the Prince of Wales Theatre on 10 April 1871. Published in London by Samuel French in the same year. Published in New York by Harold Roorbach, c1890.

Performance history in South Africa
1878: Performed in the Good Hope Gardens by "The Paultons" (Tom Paulton and Mrs Emmeline Paulton) and a company of amateurs on 21 October as part of a mixed programme that also included The Irish Tutor (Butler) and Where are we now?, a "comic, topical Negro lecture, written by a Cape Town gentleman".
