Biography

Born in Durban, South Africa.


Training

She trained at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York and with Cinda Jackson at the Loft Studio in Los Angeles.


Career

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

She set up A Million Freds Productions in London in order to produce challenging work both new and established from Britain, South Africa and the US. The first was John Steppling's The Dream Coast, the second Hello and Goodbye in which she played Hester.

She also created and performed the improvised play Part of Me which mined her Durban childhood as source material. It was first performed in London on 29 June 2014 as part of Jermyn St Theatre’s South African Season.

South African born actress and producer Janine Ulfane is based in London. Her work has in the past taken her back to South Africa in Athol Fugard’s Hello and Goodbye. She has worked in Ireland and Sweden as well as in the UK. This is her first devised piece. She is also part of an all women Impro Group, Permission Improbable.

Performed curated by artistic director, Anthony Biggs. Three plays run concurrently by Athol Fugard, Reza de Wet and Basil Appollis. Particularly striking is Cordelia Monsey’s production Of Statements by Athol Fugard, a must see and painful evocation of two naked lovers arrested under the Immorality Act.

Commissioned four weeks ago by Jermyn St Theatre to produce something for their South Africa season, Durban-born Janine Ulfane has With the help of an ensemble cast; from Yiddish history, through Bollywood and culminating in rousing Zulu warrior dance, we relive life during the apartheid years through the eyes of a child.
