He started out as a member of the Barend Fourie Geselskap, an Afrikaans touring company which began its tour in Caledon on 6 April 1934, playing Sy Pa se Skuld ("His Father's Fault/Debt") by D.P. du Toit. Other members of the company were Ria Olivier and Joan de Villiers, playing under the names Jac or "Lokkie". He went on to become a regular member of the Hendrik Hanekom Geselskap, which he joined in 1935, to take over the role of "Danie" in Oom Paul. He remained with them till the mid 1940s, starring in Generaal de Wet and Hans die Skipper, among other plays.
