The Fugard Festival, sponsored by ABSA and planned for one weekend annually, was launched in 2009 in the village of Nieu-Bethesda [1] in the Eastern Cape, where Athol Fugard used to live and where he wrote many of his plays. In Nieu Bethesda is also Helen Martin's Owl House [2], made world-famous by Fugard's play The Road to Mecca.
