(a.k.a. Kreli) (c.1815-1892) Ruler of the Gcaleka Xhosa, was paramount chief of all the Xhosa from 1835-1892. His story, and particularly his involvement in the famous incident of the killing of the cattle, has been the source of a number of plays and stories over the years. Notable among them are two early plays, Nonqause by Mary Waters and Nonqause: The Girl who Killed to Save by H.I.E. Dhlomo (the first published play in English by a black writer), and Fatima Dike's first play The Sacrifice of Kreli (1976).
