The original text
The tale of a French soldier held prisoner in Hungary, who is torn between duty to his country and his love for the daughter of an enemy.
Probably written in 1743 and first published in Genève, 1782.

1803: Performed on 23 March in the African Theatre, Cape Town by a company of "French lovers of the theatre", later referred to as the French Amateurs, with Arlequin Afficheur (Desfontaines, Barré and Radet)
