Biography
She was born on 30 August, 1924 in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England as Muriel Joy Rowson. She settled in South Africa in 1979, where she died on 18 June, 1999.
Training
Joy spent two years training in every backstage department at the Northampton Repertory Theatre - except acting. This omission was rectified by repertory and tours from the one end of the UK to the other.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Her first appearance on stage in South Africa was in Boeing-Boeing in 1972. She also performed in For Love or Money (for A.T. Productions).
She starred in Pieter Toerien’s production of Michael Frayn’s Noises Off together with Rex Garner, Eckard Rabe, Clare Marshall, Ralph Lawson and Kenneth Baker at the André Huguenet Theatre in 1983. It returned later that same year for another run.
Other productions include Bedroom Farce (as Delia, 1982), Stepping Out (as Vera, 1985), Gulls (directed by Keith Grenville, 1987), Thark (CAPAB 1990), Steel Magnolias (as Ouiser, 1990), Whose Life is it Anyway? (Baxter Theatre 1990s).
On South African televsion she is best known for her role as Alice Westgate in Westgate.
