Biography

Youth

Training

Merle trained for a year at the London Theatre Workshop and then returned to South Africa to study further at the Maas-Phillips College of Speech and Drama in Cape Town.

Career

Based in Cape Town since 1979, Merle has worked for The Space, the Baxter Company, CAPAB, PACT and Des and Dawn Lindberg.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

She has played in productions ranging from restoration comedy to street theatre; the classics to musicals, has made a TV movie, was in the TV series Valley of the Vines

Performed in Present Laughter (with PACT); The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (for Des and Dawn Lindberg).

Acted in the Space productions Don't Drink the Water, The Incredible Jungle Journey of Fenda Maria, Lysistrata S.A., The Riddle Machine , Edward II and You'll Come To Love Your Sperm Test.

For CAPAB she acted in Roulette, Tartuffe, Along Came a Spider, Women Behind Bars (as Mary Eleanor, 1984); for the Baxter in The Fantastical History of a Useless Man and The Cherry Orchard.

She played in the Pieter Toerien Productions The Hollow (1983), the part of Jill Mason in Equus which she says was her most exciting and rewarding theatrical experience up till then and in Two Into One (1986).
