La Machine Infernale ("The Infernal Machine") is a French play by Jean Cocteau (1889-1963)[1].


The original text

Based on Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, the play was written in 1932 and was first performed on the 10th of April, 1934 at the Comédie des Champs-Élysées in Paris. First published in 1934 by Éditions Bernard Grasset. The Cocteau version is a satirical Freudian take on the original myth.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as The Infernal Machine, by Albert Bermel, first performed at the Phoenix Theatre, New York, in 1958.
