F.C. Dominicus

F.C. Dominicus (Foort Cornelis Dominicus - 1884-1976), teacher and cultural historian.

Though living much of his life in Holland, he spent a number of years (1913-1920) in Grahamstown, as a teacher of languages at St Andrews College and completing a degree at the university there. He then returned to and spent the rest of his life as teacher and author but retained a strong interest in South Africa, producing a number of publications on the country its history and its people.

Of particular interest to theatre history is his little booklet Het Huiselik en Maarschappelik Leven van de Zuid-Afrikaner in de eerste helft der 18de eeuw ("The domestic and social life of the South African in the first half of the 18th century") and published in in s-Gravenhage, Holland, in 1919. Aamong other things the book details certain cultural performances in the country, such as the roots of the Van Der Stel Festival in Stellenbosch.
