COETSER, Johan. (1952-) Academic and critic. He studied at the University of the Free State and at the University of South Africa. He holds a doctorate from the University of South Africa, his thesis entitled Die geleentheidsdrama by NP van Wyk Louw. (“The Occasional Dramatic Works  NP van Wyk Louw”)  He teaches in the Department of Afrikaans and Theory of Literature at UNISA. His research interests lie at the intersection of Afrikaans drama and cultural studies. He published numerous articles on Afrikaans drama in scientific journals, made many national and international conference presentations, and delivered other contributions that include drama reviews in newspapers and academic journals, reports to publishers on drama manuscripts, and reviews of scholarly articles on dramas submitted to accredited journals. His most outstanding publications are chapters on Afrikaans drama in a standard history of Afrikaans literature, enitled Perspektief en profiel (2006), as well as a chapter on Afrikaans children’s theatre in the only literary history of Afrikaans children’s and youth literature, titled Van Patrys-hulle tot Hanna Hoekom (2005).
