Sinethemba Twani is a playwright and theatre maker.

Biography

Born in Gugulethu, Cape Town, he was raised there by his grandmother, his parents having passed away. He initially studied retail business management at CPUT, but dropped out in March 2009 to work at a Caltex garage to support his family, while also moonlighting at ArtsCape. When his first play was accepted for performance at the ArtsCape Spring Drama Season in 2011, he resigned to concentrate on his work in theatre.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

His first play, an isiXhosa text called Indlalifa, was conceived and written in 2009. To get it performed he created a short lived theatre space called Gumba Squared Theatre in Guguleto, Cape Town. Well received by locals, the piece was submitted to and showcased at the ArtsCape New Writing Programme in 2010, and - having been positively received - was translated into English as The Beneficiary with the assistance of acclaimed writer and director Fatima Dike, for presentation as the second production of the 7th Artscape spring drama season in 2011.

The Gumba Squared Theatre closed when Twani began working in theatre full time.
