Biography
Born in Cape Town.
Training
He trained at University of Natal (Durban).
Career
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Starting off on stage, he soon turned to radio as preferred medium , inter alia as announcer, performer, voice artist and station manager.
In 1995 he turned to corporate entertainment, becoming the creator, writer and presenter of a series of Murder Dinners, for the corporate market. (See website: http://www.murder.co.za), doiung projects not only in South Africa, but also abroad, e.g. in Finland, Malaysia, Egypt and so on.
His work in theatre:
Childhood debut at Maynardville Spotlight Theatre (Cape Town) in the 1964 production of Hamlet directed by Leslie French.
As a student played the title role in the Howard College debut production of Pieter Scholtz's children's theatre play -Thurkaari, Demon of the Curry Powders (1969) and was the director for Theatre Audience Guild (Howard College) production of Chris Barnard's Pa, Maak Vir My ‘n Vlieer, Pa (1971)
His work in radio
As a radio personality
Started in 1971/2 with Radio Highveld, in 1972/5 worked for Radio Port Natal, and then in 1975/83 for LM Radio/Radio 5.
Radio Management:
Became the first Programme Director of Radio 5 in 1975 – he was the driving force behind the name change (from LM Radio).
In 1985 he was appointed Programme Director of Highveld Stereo (1985-1995) – again he was responsible for the name change (from Radio Highveld)
He was the Programme director responsible for the dissolution of the SABC All-Night Radio Service (Radio Orion)
Other activities for radio
He was the creator of the popular Johannesburg Pops musical concert series in the 1980s and 1990s, also appearing as the on-stage MC for these concerts.
Created and organised the TV concert series The SA National Song Festival (1986 – 1988), with 17 radio stations competing for a Song of the Year award for new compositions.
His work in television
As a voice artist, he had a leading role (Virgil) in the Afrikaans dubbed TV series Redding Internasionaal (from Thunderbirds). It was first broadcast in 1976 (?)
