Originally instituted by the [[United Tobacco Company]] in 1965 and sponsored them until 1977,  the various awards were made for work produced or displayed in the preceding year. In 1978 the '''[[Oude Meester Foundation for the Performing Arts]]''' took over the sponsorship, and the project was renamed the '''[[Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards]]'''.
