He was in South Africa when the 1st Boer War broke out and so he decided to join a British volunteer unit in the Transvaal. He became the editor of [[The News of the Camp]] during the siege of Pretoria.
 
Unfortunately he was drowned in the Red Sea.

[[Charles Duval]] enjoyed great popularity on account of his lectures, impersonations and musical performances.
 
He wrote [[With a Show Through South Africa]] which was republished several times.
