Biography

He was born on 22 February 1926 in Maitland, Cape Town and died on 10 December 1990 in Johannesburg.

Career

In 1946 he became a professional actor, working with Hendrik Hanekom en Geselskap, before he joined the NTO. In 1955 he joined the Afrikaans service of the SABC as radio announcer. He was known as the detective in the popular radio series Staal Burger. Jamie Uys asked him in 1969 to work on a film version of Staal Burger and since then he worked as film director.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Daan had roles in the stage productions Maar die Gereg Vergeet Nooit (Hanekoms 1946), Die Jaar van die Vuuros (NTO 1952), Die Ryk Weduwee (NTO 1953), Ek Onthou vir Mamma (NTO 1954), Bitter Einde (JAATS 1955).

He wrote radio plays Hoor Jy Die Seemeeu and Die Ondernemer.

Wrote the screenplays for Salomien, Soekie (with Santie Grosskopf, 1975) and directed the films Salomien 1972, Soekie (1975), Sonja 1978.

He wrote a stage version of Die Ondernemer, published by Human en Rousseau in 1970. :
