Johan Hugo was born in Paarl in 1955. He  grew up on a farm in Wolseley and matriculated in 1973 at the High School Transvalia in Vanderbijlpark. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch and obtained his BA (Hons) in 1987 in [[Afrikaans and Dutch]] cum laude. He is married to Qwen and they have three daughters. Since 1990 he wrote sixteen Afrikaans one act plays and competed in many competitions: ATKV, Logan- in (Fraserburg), and the Montagu-toneelfees.  In 1993 he won the C.R. Swart Prize for [[''Willie'']]. in 1996 he won the ATKV competition with ''[[Die groot gegrabbel na die appel]]''.
