De Weddenschap ("The Bet") is a one-act farce in Cape Dutch (Dutch-Afrikaans) by Melt J. Brink (1842–1925).
Also known as Die Weddenskap after 1915.
The original text
Apparently based on a poem by a P.J Kikkert, it was written for Aurora II and first performed in 1871. The original text was published in Kaaps-Hollands ("Cape-Dutch") in 1905 and then re-issed in Afrikaans as Die Weddenskap in 1915.
Translations and adaptations
The play was used as one of the texts in the compilation Ons Hou Konsert II by Robert Mohr (1983).
Performances
1871: First performed in Dutch by Aurora II on 4 May, with Misdaad en Wroeging (Meys)
1905?: Possibly performed by Aurora in Cape Town.
1983: Performed as part of Ons Hou Konsert II (Melt Brink/Robert Mohr) by CAPAB in Cape Town.
