A play about love and loyalty set against the background of the Boer War of 1899-1901.
First performed in London on 27 November, 1900.

Adapted as a silent film also called The Second in Command in 1915, directed by William J. Bowman and starring Francis X. Bushman and Marguerite Snow.
Performance history in South Africa
1901: Performed by the Sass and Nelson Company as part of a season of plays they put on in the Opera House, Cape Town, from May onwards.
