Biography
Born on 27 August 1930, Leonie Jessie Aaltje Ross is the daughter of Henry Duncan Ross and his wife, Johanna Aaltje van Oostrum. Her father was an attorney in Pretoria and she grew up in the city’s Waterkloof area. From an early age she took part in the Pretoria Music Festival, presented under the auspices of the South African Society of Music Teachers. She was an accomplished pianist and after studying for her LRSM certificate taught speech and drama. There is no record of her having acted on the stage, but she appeared in a number of films, as well as in the television series Jasper le Feuvre (Daan Retief/1984). In 1956 she married Dr. John Pauw, who became the founder and musical director of the Durban Men’s Choir until his retirement in 1999, following which they settled in Hermanus. Actress Ilse-Lee van Niekerk is her granddaughter.
