He became a prominent media and arts figure, between 1970 and 1990, who held a number of senior positions with Rapport and Die Republikein in Namibia, becoming a celebrates arts critic and columnist, inter alia serving as Arts Editor for Rapport. He was also an active member of the progressive Afrikaanse Skrywersgilde.
His last years were shrouded in controversy in the light of an investigation into accusations of sexual abuse of young boys.
Slabber passed away om 19 Januarie 2021 at his home in Blouberg Strand.
