Bhaskar (1930-2003)[1] was an Indian actor, dancer and painter.

The name has been found wrongly spelled as Baskhar in some sources.

Biography

Born Bhaskar Roy Chowdhury on 11 February, 1930 in Madras, India, he became a renowned an Indian actor and dancer under the name Bhaskar, and after a stage accident that crippled him, turned to painting as a career.

Among his stage appearances was a role in the 1961 Off-Broadway production of Rabindranath Tagore’s The King of the Dark Chamber, under the direction of Krishna Shah.

Bhaskar died on 4 August, 2003 in New York City.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Bhaskar visited South Africa in 1961 when Union Artists brought the Indian director Krishna Shah out to remount The King of the Dark Chamber with Bhaskar, the renowned actress Suryakumari and students of AMDA. The production opened in Durban before playing at the Wits Great Hall - in both cases to acclaim.
