The original text
First performed at the Olympic Theatre, London, on 2 February, 1842 and published in London by Thomas Hailes Lacy in the same year. Also published by Samuel French.

1860: According to Bosman (1980) a play called The Thimble Dig, or The Artful Dodge was performed by Sefton Parry and his company in the Cape Town Theatre on 16 April, with The Lost Ship (Townsend) and a dance by Miss Powell. This seems to be an error on the part of Bosman, conflating The Artful Dodge and The Thimble Rig! (a farce in one act by John Baldwin Buckstone (1802-1879)[2]), into one play, crediting the work to Buckstone. It is probable that both plays were done that evening.
