The story is taken from a German novel called ''The Patrician'' by **, and part of the play derives from an (unnamed) French dramatization of the novel. 
 
 
 
First performed at the Theatre Royal Adelphi in 1834 (with music composed by G.H. Rodwell) and published by William Strange, 1834.
 
 
 
1861: Performed as  ''[[Henrietta the Forsaken]]'' in the [[Theatre Royal]], Cape Town, by [[Sefton Parry]] and his company as a benefit for [[Mrs Parry]]. Also performed were ''[[The Corde Volante]]'' (a celebrated act by [[H.W. Franklin]]) and ''[[Only a Halfpenny]]'' (Oxenford).
