Deriving from the ancient theme of the "Menaechmi" (identical twins) popular from the days of Menander and  Plautus and appreaing often in the works of Shakespeare, Regnard, and so on, Picard's play features an uncle and his nephew, who resemble each other. It was first performed at the Théâtre de Monsieur, Paris, on  9 June, 1791, playing there and at the Théâtre Feydeau none times (9 June to 11 August 1791). It was next seen at the Théâtre de Louvois on 8 May, 1802.
