Director Pertulia Ramaphala chose to take the Sophocles’ drama Antigone as the basis of a production for first year students of the Technikon Natal department of drama studies. Antigone Goes to Court ran at the Technikon’s Courtyard Theatre from May 25 to 27 2001.

This project takes Jean Anouilh and Lewis Galantiere’s translation of Antigone a step further. The well-worn story of Antigone – a standard workhorse for drama students - is that she buried her brother against the wishes of her uncle, King Creon. As punishment, she was walled up in a cave where she took her own life rather than suffer a slow-suffocating death.

“While abroad I had the pleasure of working with different theatre companies,” explains Pertulia who is a former manager of the Kwasuka Theatre. “Most of these companies were run by women who used different approaches to make their productions or companies unique. My experience with women in theatre inspired me to further my studies and equip myself with necessary tools for the adventure lying ahead.”

Biography

After four and half years living in the “cold city of Seattle”, Washington, Pertulia returned to South Africa in 2006. Now married with a young son, she was residing in Gordon's Bay near Cape Town at the time while working on her research with the University of Stellenbosch.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

She performed in Vivian Moodley's one-woman play Got Green Chillies, Makoti from 1993 onwards.

She taught drama at Technikon Natal department of drama studies.

She is a former manager of the Kwasuka Theatre.
