The Johannesburg Carnival (also known as the Joburg Carnival) is an annual New Year's celebration in Newtown, Johannesburg.
Based to some extent on the Rio-carnival, it features a parade that moves through the city and across the famous Nelson Mandela Bridge into Newtown where a stage is set up. Each year is based on a specific theme and troupes decked out in creative, eye catching outfits performs for the audience and prizes are awarded for best costume, choreography and best troupe performance.
