Described as a "karakterschets in vier bedrijven, voor rederijkers", it is based on a story by the same name, taken from the book Houw en Trouw. Tooneelen uit het leven van een Oostenrijksch soldaat, onder Maria Theresia ("Keep and Marry. Scenes fromn the life of an Austrian soldier, under [the rule of] Maria Theresia") by Levin Schücking (1814-1883)[1]. The original German book was translated into Dutch by J. J. A. Goeverneur and published in Groningen by Erven C. M. van Bolhuis Hoitsema in 1861.
