Alfred Herbert (“Alf”). (18*-19*) Musical promotor and impressario.
He was the son of the famous Jewish actress Sarah Sylvia.
He organised the shows African Jazz and Variety and in 1952 participated in the founding of the Union of South African Artists] (*?) He also produced Shebeen. *****
He was one of the first people to promote black entertainers, both in townships and beyond. He presented the African Jazz/Township Jazz concert series in 1956 at the City Hall which was very popular, but of course performed to segregated audiences.
