Biography

Training

Career

He works as an academic in English Studies at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban, lecturing inter alia in creative writing. He has published five volumes of poetry, as well as editing the journal Fidelities from 1995 until 2007 and the anthology Tilling the Hard Soil (UKZN Press, 2010), containing poetry, prose and art by South African writers living with disabilities.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Besides his poetry he has published two collections of plays, (one of radio plays entitled Blind Voices, published by Botsotso , 2007). His stage plays include Full Circle (2005), Missing, Presumed Dead and Miss Dolly.

As an academic he has written academic articles on poetry and theatre (see ESAT Bibliography).

Awards, etc

He has received several awards, including the Ingrid Jonker Prize (2001) for is collection, Time like Stone, the South African Literary Award for poetry and the BBC African Theatre Award. One of the prize winners in 2000 of Rewards for Playwrights Initiative for his plays Missing, Presumed Dead and Miss Dolly.
