Born in Cremona, Italy but his family emigrated to South Africa, in 1952, where Sergio worked part-time as a draftsman, while continuing to study music and persuing a career in musical theatre. Starred in Johann Strauss’s ''[[The Gypsy Baron]]'' ([[JODS]],1953) and [[Brian Brooke]]’s hit British musical ''[[Grab Me a Gondola]]'' ([[Brooke Theatre]], 1958). He later returned to Italy to study with Rossi Masetti in Milan. He toured extensively in Europe, and, in 1962, he undertook an American tour. In 1972, he became an American citizen. There he changed his name to Sergio Franchi and went on to have a terrific career in cabaret and television. Brother of singer [[Dana Valery]].
