Die Schlaue Wittwe, Oder, Die Temperamente ("The clever widow, or the temperaments") is a German farce in one act by August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (1761-1819)[1].

Performance history in South Africa

1823: Produced in the Dutch translation by the amateur company Tot Nut en Vermaak on 2 August in the African Theatre, as afterpiece to De Militaire Stand (Arresto). According to Bosman, (1928:p.235) it appeared under the title De Listige Weduwe ("The devious widow").

1833: Performed in Dutch as De Listige Weduwe, of De Temperamenten by "Het Nieuw Stellenbossche Tooneel Gezelschap" ("The new Stellenbosch Theatre Company") Door Yver Vruchtbaar, in the Stellenbosch "Schouwburg" (theatre) on 26 October, with De Kluizenaar op Formentera (Von Kotzebue). These performances were repeated on 7 November 1833.

1846: Performed in Dutch as De Listige Weduwe, of De Temperamenten by the combined company, Het Privaat Hollandsch Tooneellievend Gezelschap playing under the combined motto Tot Nut en Vermaak en Door Yver Vruchtbaar, in the Hope Street Theatre, Cape Town on 18 August, as afterpiece to Valvaise en Adelaide, of De Zegepraal der Vriendschap over de Liefde (Wisselius).

1851: Performed in Dutch as De Listige Weduwe, of De Temperamenten by Door Yver Bloeit de Kunst on 9 October in the Drury Lane Theatre, Cape Town, as afterpiece to Nathan van Geneve (Warnsinck).
