Schalk Theron founded the Sonop Afrikaner Kring ("Sunrise Afrikaner Circle, a cultural organisation, in Johannesburg in 1939.
They presented Die Ongeluksvoël under Theron's direction and its success led to the founding of the Johannesburgse Afrikaanse Amateur Toneelspelers or JAATS, the well-known Afrikaans amateur group.
