The House by the Lake by British playwright Hugh Mills (1906-1971). A thriller first produced in 1956 at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London and has since become a staple of amateur dramatics. The main characters are Maurice and Stella, a brother and sister who plot to murder their unlikeable brother, Colin. The other characters include Maurice's wife, Janet, Colin's long-suffering wife, Iris, and Colonel Forbes, a neighbour.

First performed in South Africa in 1957 by the Johannesburg Reps as its 200th production. Directed by Cecil Williams, starring Sonia Dresdel.

Malcolm Woolfson was involved in a production of this play in 1958.
