The original text
Author's note in programme of the performance in 1982: 'This programme is the outcome of years of fascination with the lives of British monarchs and with British history. I can remember from the moment of my introduction to the Henrys, Marys, Edwards, Richards and Elizabeths a growing involvement with these people. When I finally got them sorted out, I decided to tell their stories - not only as I found them in the Histories, but also as I made their acquaintance in dramatic literature.
