Red, a play based on the American painter Mark Rothko, written by John Logan, opened at the Donmar Warehouse, London, on December 3, 2009. The one-act, 90 minute play centers on the period of development of the Seagram Murals. Alfred Molina played Rothko. It was directed by the Donmar's artistic director Michael Grandage. It had sell-out attendance.

In March 2010, Red moved to the John Golden Theater on Broadway in New York City with the same stars (Alfred Molina, Eddie Redmayne) and director. It ran from 1 April to 27 June 2010 receiving generally favorable reviews and winning six Tony awards, including Best Play. Red has subsequently been produced by Auckland Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company and the Fortune Theatre, Dunedin.
