The so-called "locations" or "townships" were largely created and so named in the 19th and 20th centuries under the shadow of colonialism and apartheid restrictive regulations about racial seperation in all facets of life, including the presentations and attendance of theatrical performances.

The Ikhwezi Community Theatre Festival, Cape Town

In 1998 the Baxter Theatre created the annual Ikhwezi Community Theatre Festival to host a selection of the township productions.
