The play
The play - which Fugard describes as a work of fiction - is inspired by the life and work of Nukain Mabusa and the Rock Garden he created in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa from the 1960s to 1980. The play is set on a hill in the Revolver Creek area of the Mpumalanga province. Act 1 is set in 1981, Act 2 in 2003.
The play was first produced by Signature Theatre in New York City on 11 May 2015, directed by Fugard.
