James Brister 1831 - 1896.

Biography

Brister was born in Herts, England, on April 20, 1831, and died in Port Elizabeth on November 7, 1896. He was a well-known amateur actor and was married to Matilda Tee on July 5, 1860. He was the Mayor of Port Elizabeth from 1884-1890 and in 1894.

Training

Nothing is known about his training.

Career

In his professional life he was a furniture importer and manufacturer. He was also involved in the S A Milling Company, the Humewood Beach Hotel, the Zwartkops Boating Association, Port Elizabeth Institute Hospital, and athletics. Brister House and Brister Place and Crescent were named after him although Brister House has now been renamed.
