Over the years the regiment saw active duty during the Bechuanaland Campaign (1896), the [[Anglo-Boer War]], including the relief of Kimberley. In 1906 the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn became colonel-in-chief of the regiment and the regiment's name was thus changed to the [[Duke of Connaught and Strathearn's Own Cape Town Highlanders]].

In 1906 the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn became colonel-in-chief of the regiment and the regiment's name was thus changed to the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn's Own Cape Town Highlanders. In August 2019 the regiment was again renamed, now as the Gonnema Regiment.
