The original text
Described as "a serio-comic drama in two acts", the play was first performed at the Royal Olympic Theatre, London, on 2 December, 1858 and published by Thomas Hailes Lacy in London and in New York by R.M. De Witt (1858/9?).

Performance history in South Africa
1868: Performed by the Le Roy-Duret Company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 6 January as part of a benefit for T.H. Paul, with Brough's burlesque version of Euripides's Medea and songs and dances.
