Il Giuramento, an opera Mercadante used a libretto by Gaetano Rossi, based on Hugo's novel. The opera was first performed in 1837. .
La Gioconda, the well-known opera in four acts by Amilcare Ponchielli, with an Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito (as Tobia Gorrio) was also based on Hugo's play. , First performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, on 8 April 1876, Ponchielli revised the work several times and it was especially successful in its third and final version, performed at the same theatre on 28 March 1880, opening in the USA at the Metropolitan Opera on 20 December 1883.
