He is initially listed as a member of the Young Men’s Institute Amateur Christy’s in 1867-8 and was a leading member of the private (i.e. non regimental) concert company known as Amateur Coloured Troupe in the Minstrelsy[1] style popularized by the Christy Minstrels. They were active in Cape Town between 1869 and 1871.
