(1908-1980) American playwright, novelist and screenplay writer. Settled in the Cape in the 1950s, married South African actress Berdine Grünewald and lived in the country for many years, dying here. Became very interested in human evolution and anthropology, writing a trilogy of popular books on this [ African Genesis (1961), The Territorial Imperative (1966), The Social Contract (1970)]. Among his best known plays are Thunder Rock (1939 – First produced in South africa by the Johannesburg REPS in 1940) and Jeb (1946).
