Caligula is a play by Algerian philosopher, author, and journalist Albert Camus (1913-1960) [1]. An influential play about cruelty and the arbitary exercise of power. Written in 1938 and first performed in France in 1945.

1955: First performed in South Africa in English by Ruth Oppenheim’s company at the Windmill Theatre in 1955 with Stanley Coghan as the deranged Roman emperor.
1955: Produced in 1955 by Mavis Taylor for the University of Cape Town Dramatic Society at the Little Theatre, Cape Town, opening 22 June 1955. Costumes designed by Mavis Taylor, music arranged by Gunther Pulvermacher, lighting by Clifford Taylor.
1969: Johannesburg Repertory Society, Library Theatre, with Brenda Wood as Caesonia.
