The Will is a comedy in five acts by Frederic Reynolds (1764 –1841)[1]
The original text
A popular work, it was first performed on April 19, 1797 and in 1805 and 1829 played at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane . Also popular in the USA.
It was first published in London by GG and J Robinson (1897) , and among the many following editions are Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, (1806), in Philadelphia by T. H. Palmer, (1822), and in an annotated version by John Cumberland, London, (1829).
Performance history in South Africa
1818: Performed in the African Theatre, Cape Town by the Garrison Players on 25 April with The Lying Valet (Garrick).
1818: Performed in the African Theatre, Cape Town by the Garrison Players on 7 November, as a benefit for Mrs Brough, with Two Strings to your Bow (Goldoni/Jephson).
