Biography

Youth

Training

Studied at the University of Cape Town (BA) with Robert Mohr, then studied directing at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, British Drama League (London), British Council (Stratford-upon-Avon). Later he obtained an MA and a PhD, from the University of Illinois.

Career

He started his stage career with The Space and later became resident director and dramaturge for the Performing Arts Councils (PACT) and artistic director of the President Theatre [??**] in Johannesburg.

In 1987 he moved to the USA where he headed the Musical Theater program at College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, until 2019 [1].

He made his Professional Directorial debut directing Die Burgemeester for KRUIK in 1972 (Nico Malan “Laboratory Theatre").

He directed A Flea in Her Ear (1970), Story Theatre (PACT, 1974), Dubbelspel met die Dood (PACT 1974), Lunch Hour Theatre? at The Space (1972), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (PACT, 1982), A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking (Market Theatre, 1982), Snoopy!!!, (CAPAB, 1983), Joe Orton's What the Butler Saw (President Theatre, Johannesburg), Baby With the Bathwater, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Alpha Beta.
