Steve Dyer is a South African born musician, composer, performer, musical director, conceptualiser, and producer.

Biography

Born in Pietermaritzburg in 1960, he taught himself to play the guitar at the age of eleven, studied music as a matric subject at Michaelhouse High School, then went on to study music at the University of Natal, completing a B.Mus. degree in classical music in 1981.

He left South Africa in 1982 to begin an international career as musician, and forming the band Southern Freeway. Between 1982 and 1992 he worked in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Japan. In this time he also worked with Amandla, the Cultural Ensemble of the ANC.

In he 1992 returned to South Africa, and began to do stage, film, television and radio work, both locally and internationally.

His work in theatre, film, media and performance

Besides composing music for a variety of films, TV and radio programmes and public events (e.g. the ballet Passage of Rites, choreographed by Sylvia Glasser of the Moving Into Dance Company; Meerkats Divided, a documentary directed by Richard Goss;
